Man accused of using duplicate keys in US$128k Harare break-in

A Harare court is hearing a case in which a Dzivarasekwa man allegedly used duplicate keys to break into a woman's home and steal US$128,000 before allegedly buying luxury vehicles with the proceeds.

Two of his alleged accomplices remain at large.

Andrew Hanyani, 39, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court facing a charge of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances.

The court heard that Hanyani and his alleged accomplices had access to the complainant and her maid, enabling them to make duplicate keys without the complainant's knowledge.

It is alleged that on June 10, 2026, the trio used the copied keys to unlock the main gate, security gate, front door and the complainant's bedroom.

Once inside, they allegedly ransacked a wardrobe and stole US$128,000 in cash before leaving the house unlocked and fleeing the scene.

The complainant discovered the break-in later that day at about 4pm after returning home from her farm and reported the matter to police.

Investigators later received information from a source who claimed to have seen the accused and his alleged accomplices driving into the complainant's property on the day of the incident.

The same source allegedly later saw the men spending large sums of money and purchasing vehicles.

Police tracked down and arrested Hanyani.

The court heard that during investigations, he allegedly led detectives to the recovery of two vehicles, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Land Rover Discovery 3 which investigators believe were purchased shortly after the alleged offence.
