Borrowdale Maid, Boyfriend Accused in US$128k Heist

A Harare man has been accused of stealing US$128,000 from a Borrowdale home after allegedly acting on information provided by his girlfriend, who worked as a maid at the residence.

Phillip Nyasha Mushanawani, 41, is facing a charge of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances in connection with the alleged theft.

According to the State, the complainant returned home with US$128,000 in cash on June 8 and stored the money in a wardrobe in her bedroom.

Prosecutors allege that Mushanawani and the maid, Linda Mubure, who were romantically involved, conspired to steal the money by making duplicate keys to the bedroom.

The State further alleges that on June 10, after the homeowners left for their Norton farm, Mubure deliberately left the main entrance unlocked and alerted Mushanawani that the house was unoccupied.

Mushanawani allegedly entered the house, used duplicate keys to access the bedroom and removed the cash from the wardrobe before leaving undetected.

The theft was reportedly discovered when the complainant returned home and found the property unsecured, with signs that the wardrobe had been disturbed.

Investigators also allege that Mubure attempted to delete WhatsApp conversations linked to the matter, while Mushanawani later shared photographs showing envelopes containing cash with other suspected accomplices who remain at large.

Police arrested Mushanawani on June 13, 2026 and investigations are continuing.
