The number of unregistered vehicles or that do not pay for their licences regularly stands at around 500 000, an indication that compliance with the rules and regulations of the country’s transport sector is still a major challenge.
The national vehicle population according to the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration stood at 1.2 million as at December 31, 2022.
Of these, only 700 000 were compliant with the country’s vehicle registration and licensing regulations.
Zinara Chief Executive Officer Nkosinathi Ncube said: “nationally, the total in 1.2 million, including the 100 000 deregistered. Last year, 700 000 were fully licensed while 400 000 were not.”
The Zinara CEO added that they used to collect licence fees for about half the total number of vehicles in Zimbabwe but this year, they are targeting about 800 000 vehicles.
“We have come up with a number of initiatives to improve and push up the figures through a number of initiatives like the blitz that we do with ZBC. This is money we use for road maintenance, so compliance is important,” he said.
