Livestock impounded after being found roaming around Plumtree Town will now cost the owners penalties of up to US$ 10 a day per animal, the local authority has decreed.
“Farmers and the general public are advised that with effect from February 13, 2023, all stray animals will be impounded in line with SI 102 of 2015, Protection of Lands and Natural By Law as read with Stock Trespass Act 19:14,” said acting Town Secretary Mr Thembelani Nyoni in a notice.
Stray donkeys attract a fine of US$10, each goat will be charged US$5 and those seeking to retrieve impounded chickens will part with US$2 per day.
Besides posing a health hazard to humans and other animals by spreading disease, animals wandering around can cause road crashes. Owners also risk losing the untended livestock to thieves.
