In an effort to create and enhance a good relationship with its farmers, Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe has introduced the Annual Sugarcane Outgrowers Awards with the inaugural ceremony being held at THZ Country Club last Friday.
The awards are run under five main categories, that is, Best Female, Best Youth, Small Plots, Medium Plots, Large Farmers and the main one, which is the Best Overall Winner.
THZ Corporate Executive Darhlia Garwe confirmed the new annual event during Friday’s function and winners are from 1 145 growers drawn from five milling groups, Triangle Mill Groups, Triangle Estate Mill Group, Hippo Valley Mill Group, Hippo Valley Estate Mill Group and Mkwasine Mill Group.
“The awards are to enhance good relationship between the farmer and the company,” said Garwe.
The guest of honour at the ceremony, Audrey Mabveni, who is Director of the Zimbabwe Sugarcane Association Experiment Station, said the awards will promote agro-excellence through mentoring of farmers.
“The event is important not just to having the winning farmer but to mentor the young generation of upcoming farmers and incorporating youths and women,” said Mabveni.
