Veteran football coach Luke “Vahombe” Masomerev has joined Eastern Region Division One team Mutare City Rovers, a side that is owned by Mutare City Council.

He will be deputised by Chasten Ngondonga and former Warriors midfielder, Shepherd Muradzikwa, who is the club’s fitness trainer.

Masomere who calls himself the Doctor of Football, had a stint with another Mutare-based side, Manica Diamonds, from its formation in 2017. He helped the club gain promotion into the Premier Soccer League in 2018, with seven games to spare before leaving Manica Diamonds and the city of Mutare in 2019.

Masomere says his aim is to accomplish the same feat with Mutare City Rovers.

“Football has brought me back to Mutare. I have fallen in love with the city and its people. Every time I come to Mutare I feel like I’m coming home. It’s more like my second home and I am happy to be back here.

“My target is to get back to PSL with Mutare City Rovers and that is also the club’s target. We are conducting trials for all departments because we really want to have a competitive team that can challenge for honours. The club executive, council and myself are going to strike a good working combination,” he said.

Masomere has coached several premiership teams, including How Mine FC, Shabanie Mine FC, Dynamos FC, Masvingo United, CAPS United and Manica Diamonds.

Vahombe, without doubt one of the most nomadic coaches in Zimbabwe, has also led Botswana clubs Gaborone United, Nico United and Notwane.
