The City of Harare has said water production has been reduced to stretch valuable stocks from 20 hours of operation to 30 hours with effect from February 9, 2023.
This, the local authority explained, is due to low stocks of aluminium sulphate.
Currently, one pump is running to Warren Control and one to Lonchinvar which means that the supply level is almost insignificant and all parts of the city will be affected.
In a notice, the council stated:
“Our supplier of liquid aluminium sulphate has suffered a breakdown at their manufacturing plant which they hope will be repaired by Saturday morning and will resume deliveries later on the course of that day.”
Meanwhile, the council is expecting granular aluminium to arrive in the country from Monday 13 February 2023.
It said efforts are underway to seek an alternative delivery sooner to cut the length of the shutdown.
Water supply coverage around the city has been severely affected as a result of this reduced level of production.
Availability of clean water in Harare has steadily decreased over the years and residents have been saying this long unresolved water crisis is a ticking time bomb of magnified health risks to them.
