Five people died when a Toyota Hilux vehicle travelling towards Masvingo with three passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hiace kombi, travelling in the opposite direction with 17 passengers on board.
Sixteen passengers were injured.
“The ZRP has reported a fatal road traffic accident which occurred yesterday at around 1610 hours at the 254 km peg along Mutare –Masvingo Road in which 16 people were injured,” police said.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo General Hospital Mortuary for post mortem, while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In a similar incident, police in the Hwange area are investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident in which an unknown motorist hit a 29-year-old man.
The road traffic accident occurred on Monday, February 13, at the 288km peg along Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road around 0300 hours.
The victim died on the spot.
