Botswana and Namibia have suspended passports and have adopted their respective national identity cards as travel documents to cross the borders.
Botswana said that the move to use IDs will serve to eliminate barriers to the free movement of people, goods and services, thereby strengthening trade between Botswana and Namibia.
“This development is the culmination of the initiative by the two Heads of State, Ho Excellency Dr. Mokogweetsi E.K Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, and Ho Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, dating back to 2019. It is a clear demonstration of their unwavering commitment to implement a uniquely progressive aspect of the strategy of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The Agreement will thus serve to eliminate barriers to the free movement of people, goods and services, thereby strengthening trade between the two countries,” read the statement in part.
The use of IDs for cross-border travel will enhance economic and regional integration and further promote safe and orderly migration.
The development is also expected to foster social cohesion among the citizens of the two nations, who share profound historical, cultural and economic bonds.
