Unhappy that his wife had dished more meat to a male customer, a Penhalonga gold panner, James Muronzi, bashed his wife, Fellistus Gwizo in front of other customers, accusing her of having an affair with the said man.
The matter came to light when Gwizo sought the assistance of the Mutare Civil Court to get a protection order against Muronzi.
Magistrate Xavier Chipato presided over the matter and granted Gwizo the protection order which is valid for a year.
The court heard that Muronzi accused Gwizo of dishing more meat to a male customer. Muronzi accused his wife of having an affair with the man, resulting in him undressing her, claiming he is the one who bought the clothes she was putting on.
Gwizo told the court that although they had been married for 10 years, Muronzi was in the habit of assaulting her, destroying property and chases her out into the night with the children whenever they had a misunderstanding.
“He assaulted me in front of my customers and undressed me, telling people that I am a woman of loose morals. He said I should surrender the clothes I was wearing to him as he is the one who bought them.
“While he was assaulting me, he also told the people gathered and my co-workers that I am an HIV patient who takes medication every day, yet it is not true. My co-workers came to my rescue and gave me clothes to put on after Muronzi had stripped me naked,” said Gwizo.
Gwizo added that she is working as a food vendor in Penhalonga in order to assist her husband to raise money for their family upkeep.
Muronzi claimed that he did not assault her but that he only asked why he had given the customer more meat.
“She did not give me a satisfactory answer, but started shouting at me,” he said.
