With indications pointing to a postponement of the Kudakwashe Chiwandire-Yamelith Mercado World Boxing Council super-bantamweight title bout earlier scheduled for today, “Take Money” and her entourage confirmed having arrived in Mexico City.
At the time of going to press they were scheduled to connect to Chihuahua, the venue of the fight, at 6:30am Mexican time. By air travel, the journey is 1 245km long and takes close to three hours. In terms of time difference Chihuahua is eight hours behind Harare.
Practically, it means the fight is off because weigh in, supposed to have been done a day before, is still an outstanding item on the programme.
Team “Take Money” was compelled to divert the route plan and travel via Amsterdam instead of Paris owing to delays in securing visas. And once in the Netherlands, so bad was the weather that the connecting flight was cancelled, forcing them to put up in that country for a night.
When Zim Now contacted WBC vice president Houicine Houichi to comment on the latest developments, he said he was not privy to what was happening on the ground as he was on another assignment elsewhere.
“I am actually in France for another WBC youth title. I don't know what's happening in Mexico. I will keep you updated once I get more information.
“In any case, it's strange that the Zimbabwean team accepted to fly late to Mexico as they need to be there few days to acclimitise with Mexico which is different from Zimbabwe,” he said.
Weather conditions in Chihuahua are said to always be in the extremes. They can be as high as 48 degrees celcius and at times it snows with occasions of cyclones.
