A family that lives along Fox Close in Borrowdale West, Fox Harare is stranded after losing all their property in a fire that gutted a section of the house today.

The fire allegedly broke out when a cooking gas tank exploded.

Speaking to Zimbabwe Now, one of the eyewitnesses, who identified herself only as Wadzanai and is a helper at the house, said the fire broke out soon after she had used gas to prepare food for the baby.

“I heard a sound when I was outside finishing my laundry. When I went to check, I saw smoke coming out through the window. I had just finished preparing eggs for the child before I went outside. So, I am suspecting that it is the gas tank that caused the fire,” she said.

Wadzanai narrated that she called for help and neighbours came. Upon discovering that the situation was beyond their control, they called the Greendale and Belvedere Fire Brigade for assistance.

The fire fighters responded swiftly and doused the flames they spread to other parts of the house.

Wadzanai said the fire fighters rushed to the scene in less than 10 minutes but, the inferno had destroyed everything in the room where the fire started.

Another eyewitness, who declined to be named, said no one was inside at the time when the incident occurred.
“We do not know exactly how the fire started as there was no one in the house when the fire broke out. All the property which was in the affected room was burnt to ashes,” he said.

Evans Jena who is Station Officer at Central Fire Station said he believed the helper left the gas on, causing the fire, which badly damaged the room of a tenant and destroyed all the property.

He said they had disconnected electricity cables and insisted people not to switch on the transformer as it risks re-igniting the fire.

Jena said use of cooking gas without proper knowledge is a serious safety risk as it intensifies fires, making them extremely difficult to extinguish and leave them at the risk of re-igniting.
