Amnesty International Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations, with technical and financial support from The United Nations Democracy Fund, have launched a new project titled ‘Strengthening Community Radio for Sustainable Access to Information, Freedom of Expression, and Citizen Participation.’
ZACRAS said the project, which will run for two years, will enhance the management capacity of community radio stations to sustain their operations.
“The project also seeks to improve the community radio regulatory framework to facilitate licensing, fundraising and enable community radio stations to operate independently,” said ZACRAS in a statement.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation considers community radios as the medium of the people, by the people and for the people as it has a significant role to play in communicating and furthering the Sustainable Development Goals.
It said the community media becomes more important during a crisis situation like the one being currently faced following the outbreak of COVID-19.
Radio is the biggest means of communication in Zimbabwe, as it reaches the largest parts of the country especially the rural and marginalised areas.
