Mum wants daughter to stop collecting rentals from house

Michael Mashiri

A mother has taken her daughter to court claiming that she was now chasing other children from the house, arguing that she was the one who had extended it.

Sonia Sibanda was before the Harare Civil Court, pleading that Sonia Sibanda should stop collecting the rentals as it was the money that was helping her with her welfare.

The emotional Sonia said her daughter was claiming that she did not have a house.

“She is my child. She comes at the house and harasses me. She is taking too much of the money that comes from rentals and at times, l will be left with no money.

“At times, she can come and take US$120 and l will be only left with US$60. If l complain, she says l do not need so much money.

“She is saying l do not have a house. She says she paid for the money to extend the house,” said Sonia.

She told the court that Cindy was in the habit of chasing other children from the house saying she was the one who extended it.

Sonia added that when she told her daughter to stop collecting money from the house she said she was abandoning her because of that.

“When l told her not to collect the money she said she was washing her hands off from me and never wanted anything to do with me.

“Later she started collecting again,” she said.

Cindy refuted the allegations that were laid by her mother saying she was just taking money to pay the house rates.

“What she is saying is a misrepresentation. It is true l am the one who extended it, what l just do is l go there and pay rates.

“There was a moment when l went there and took US$60 from the house because l am not working at the moment,” she said.

Cindy highlighted that, she had left work in 2012 and at times she would face hard times that was the reason why she took the money.

She informed the court that her siblings were not taking care of the mother and she was the only one who was doing the work.

“Mama suffered a stroke and l was the only one who was doing everything. She had Covid-19, l was there for her.

“If l do not call my siblings to check on her they will live their lives without even calling her,” she said.

The magistrate who presided over the matter advised Sonia to approach the appropriate court as her court only dealt with protection orders.

“I am dismissing the matter. Please, approach the appropriate court if you need to bar her from collecting rent. Make an application for an interdict,” she said.
