Tobacco rakes in US$640m

As the tobacco marketing season reached 50 days, sales of the golden leaf have reached US$640 million, the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board has said.

TIMB said a total of 213 million kg of tobacco were sold, at an average price of US$3 per kg by Monday.

About 2.69 million bales have been sold since the beginning of the marketing season on a mass of 2.76 million bales laid.

Auction floors have taken delivery of 16 million kg, while contractors have contributed 197 million kg.

The highest price achieved to date is US$6,10 per kg, while the lowest is US$0,10.
