A 26-year-old Chipinge man, Claudious Mapeto, lost his life after he was fatally stabbed with a sharp object.
The suspect, Ephraim Mukwenga, was among a group that was returning from a soccer tournament at Tongogara Refugee Camp, when he made inappropriate advances towards a young lady who was in Mapeto's company.
The 26-year-old brave gallantly defending his lover's honour when he stood up against Mukwenga's attempts to hold the young lady's booty.
In a valiant act of protection, the victim stood up against this disrespectful act, but tragically, it cost him his life.
Provincial police spokesperson for Manicaland province, Inspector Norbert Muzondo, confirmed the incident that took place in Middle Sabi, within Chief Mutema’s jurisdiction.
Mapeto confronted Mukwenga, challenging him to a physical fight during which Mukwenga drew an unidentified sharp object with which he stabbed Mapeto on the left side of the chest.
Mukwenga disappeared after the act.
Mapeto succumbed to the injuries before he could receive medical attention at Tongogara Refugee Camp Hospital.
“Mapeto and Mukwenga were part of the people who were coming from a soccer tournament at Tongogara Refugee Camp.
"On their way home, Mukwenga saw Mapeto walking in front of him alongside his girlfriend, Antonetta Maronga.
"Mukwenga asked Mapeto in a provocative manner if Maronga was his girlfriend. He went on to ask Mapeto if he could fondle her backside.
"The infuriated Mapeto challenged Mukwenga for a fight. Mukwenga produced an unknown sharp object and charged towards Mapeto. He stabbed him on the left side of the chest. Mapeto shouted for help.
A motorist, Caroline Maphosa, rushed Mapeto to Tongogara Refugee Camp Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
His body was taken to Chipinge District Hospital for a post-mortem,” said Inspector Muzondo.
Police are now looking for Mukwenga and are appealing to the public with information which may lead to Mukwenga's arrest to contact ant nearest police station.
