A 34-year-old man from Nguboyenja suburb caused a stir in the Bulawayo central business district when he went on a wrecking spree, smashing parked and moving vehicles’ windscreens with bricks.
This came to light when David Phiri appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa, facing three charges of malicious damage to property.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 7 June.
Allegations against Phiri are that on May 23, 2023 at a centre parking lot along Fife Street and between 6th and Leopold Takawira Avenues, he jumped onto the windscreen of a Toyota Vitz belonging to Siphethangani Sibanda who was seated inside.
Sibanda shouted at Phiri and he went on to climb on the roof of the car and it was damaged in the process.
The value of the damaged roof is US$250.
On the same day, another victim, Maxwell Dhobha was driving his car and when he got to the corner of 5th Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way. He was approached by Phiri who was carrying a brick.
Phiri then threw the brick, which hit his vehicle’s windscreen, damaging it in the process.
The value of the damaged windscreen is US$100.
Later on the very day, another victim Ruth Sithole was driving her car, a Honda Fit and when she was at a corner along 5th Avenue and George Silundika, Phiri threw a brick and it damaged her vehicle’s windscreen. The value of the damaged windscreen is US$150.
The three victims reported the matter to the police and investigations were carried out, leading to Phiri’s arrest.
The total value of the damaged property is US$500.
