The body of Thomas Mapfumo’s brother and Blacks Unlimited percussionist Lancelot Mapfumo who died on 17 September in Oregon, USA, is expected in Zimbabwe tomorrow, October 8, for burial at a place yet to be announced.
“The body of the late legendary percussionist and long serving member of the Blacks Unlimited, Lancelot Mapfumo, will land at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Saturday the 8th of October at 1435hrs aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight,” said family spokesperson Blessing Vava.
“All Chimurenga music fans who wish to receive the body of Bla Lance are welcome. We will announce the finer details on the burial arrangements on Saturday,” Vava said.
Lancelot was young brother to Chimurenga music guru, Thomas Mapfumo who together with his band migrated to Oregon, the US, where they have been based for the past 20 years.
Lance succumbed to bone cancer and until the final decision to bring his body home to Zimbabwe, there had been debate surrounding the ideal country of burial.
Thomas Mapfumo earlier announced he will not be present at the burial for reasons he described as fear for his life.
The Government of Zimbabwe has said that Thomas Mapfumo has nothing to be afraid of and is free to get into the country at will.
