Mines and Mining Development Minister Soda Zhemu has officially launched the Zimbabwe Chinese New Energy Mining Enterprise Association in the capital, Harare.

Zimbabwe’s lithium mining industry began booming in 2022. As one of the countries with relatively rich lithium mineral resources in Africa and the whole world, Zimbabwe, from the government to enterprises and individuals, was not fully prepared for the sudden outbreak of the lithium mining market.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Zhemu said the formation of the association is important as it will strengthen the relationship of miners.

“The formation of this Association is important as it acts as the bridge that strengthens exchanges between the lithium miners and other stakeholders including Government. The Association will also safeguard the rights and interests of its members and promote the development of the lithium sector,” he said.

Zhemu said that Lithium is one of the important minerals that are being mined in the country and its sustainable exploitation is expected to play a crucial role for the country’s economic development.

“As we all know, most of the lithium is used in battery manufacturing. Demand for battery minerals is growing as a result of increases in electric vehicles, the use of renewable energy and the storage of electric energy. As the exports grow, the country will benefit through increased revenue and job creation.

“It is pleasing to note that as Zimbabwe, we host various battery minerals that include lithium, graphite, nickel and cobalt.

“Chinese companies are at the forefront of new energy technology, and they have a wealth of experience in developing and operating new energy projects. This Association will bring together Chinese and Zimbabwean companies to work together to develop Zimbabwe's new energy sector,” he added.

Zimbabwe Chinese New Energy Mining Enterprise Association President Zhenhua Wang said that the association needs the support of the Ministry of Mines and the Chinese embassy.

“The development of the association requires the care, support and guidance of the Ministry of Mines of the Zimbabwean government and the Chinese Embassy.

“It also requires the joint efforts and support of all colleagues. Let us build our respective enterprises well and develop our association well. Many hands and joint effort will make the work lighter.

“I believe that through everyone’s unity and cooperation, we will definitely promote the development and progress of the industry and help Zimbabwe become an important part of the global new energy industry supply chain,” he said.
