Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency Director-General Taguma Mahonde has appeared before Harare magistrate Judge Marehwanazvo Gofa on allegations of defrauding ZimStat by claiming an educational allowance for a non-existent child.

The State, represented by prosecutor Pardon Dziva, alleges that since 2021, Mahonde claimed school fees allowances for three children, amounting to US$2 400 each term, while submitting invoices for two children named Isheanesu Mahonde and Jordan Mahonde to the finance department.

Mahonde allegedly claimed US$2 400 every term for five terms, with the money being deposited into his personal bank account without any supporting school invoices.

When investigations began on March 6, 2023, Taguma Mahonde attempted to cover up the offense by refunding US$826 out of US$4 000, which was claimed for a non-existent child.

Mahonde is also facing a second count of obstructing the course of justice by interfering with witnesses.

The State alleges that Claudius Matiza, who was dismissed by Mahonde after reporting him to ZACC, is a key witness in this case, was contacted by Mahonde and threatened to stop reporting him to the anti-graft body.

Mahonde pleaded not guilty to all charges and has been remanded in custody.
