The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has seized 450 bottles of illegal cough syrups after conducting a blitz at Old Trafford Flat in Belvedere, Harare, Wednesday.
In a press statement, MCAZ, they said the bottles contained BronCleer and they had conducted such raid to fight the illegal and abuse of drugs in the country.
"MCAZ Inspectors working with Officers from the CID Drugs and Narcotics, discovered and seized 350 bottles of BronCleer cough syrup and 100 bottles of Adco-Salterpyn syrup.
"The suspect present at the scene is currently cooperating with law enforcement agencies to assist with their investigations into this matter," they said.
They added that BronCleer and Adco-Salterpyn Syrup had an opioid and were not registered in Zimbabwe.
And the abuse of such drugs might end up having serious negative effects on the user.
"Opioids are considered dangerous drugs and these cough syrups are being abused by opioid drug addicts.
"Its misuse poses serious health risks and can lead to various complications if not used under proper medical supervision," they said.
MCAZ said they were dedicated in the public health through making sure that only allowed medicines are made available on the market.
"The Authority will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the illicit trade of such substances.
"MCAZ urges members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the drug and substance abuse and distribution or sale of unregulated pharmaceutical products. Your cooperation is vital in our collective efforts to protect public health and safety," they added.
MCAZ, is an authorised body acknowledged by an Act of Parliament, The Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act.
The statutory body is a successor of the Drugs Control Council and the Zimbabwe Regional Drug Control Laboratory.
