Since opening up its doors to the public in March this year, the Epworth Magistrates’ Courts have concluded more than 1 000 cases.
Epworth, a populous suburb in Harare Metropolitan, is one of the beneficiaries of the Second Republic’s justice decentralisation initiative, and to date, the 1 000-plus cases that have gone through the courts include domestic violence, theft, and assault.
Out of more than 1 800 matters completed, 560 people were convicted.
The development has also brought relief to the local leadership.
“Since the coming in of the second republic, we have seen a lot of development including infrastructure development. As a testimony to this development, we have seen the construction of Epworth Court here.
“The court is helping this community a lot. Our people have been facing challenges in terms of transport but now we are seeing changes,” said Epworth Town Secretary, Dr Wilton Mhanda.
The construction of courthouses across the country is part of the government’s inclusive development agenda of leaving no one and no place behind in the development agenda.
