A man, who defrauded a complainant of US$7 500 after selling her a non-existent stand, has appeared in court.
Nelson Mandizvidza, 48, appeared before magistrate Ethel Chichera at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing fraud allegations.
The complainant in this case is Judith Chikonono, 35, of Mbare.
The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that sometime in May 2019, Chikonono was looking for a residential stand to buy and was referred to Afripolitant Consultancy Private Limited, trading as Low Income Housing Developers, by her mother.
Chikonono allegedly went to Mandizvidza’s offices and was told that the company was selling 300 and 1 000-square metre residential stands in Ruwa at US$12 000 and US$15 000 respectively.
She was told that, she will be allocated a stand after paying US$6 000.
On May 13, 2019, she allegedly paid US$3 940 as deposit for the purchase of a 300-square metre stand and was issued with a receipt.
On June 5, 2019, she allegedly made another payment of US$2 040 to make a total deposit of US$6 000 and was given a receipt.
Chikonono was taken to the residential stands by one of Low-Income Housing Developers employee and was allocated her residential stand.
She allegedly paid subscriptions for her stand totalling to US$1 500 from December 2019 to September 2021.
Chikonono later went to start developing her stand but was surprised to find out that there was someone who claimed to be the owner.
She went back to the company offices and was allocated another stand which she later discovered belonged to someone else.
Chikonono discovered that she had been duped as Mandizvidza kept on giving her false promises, prompting her to make a police report.
As a result, it is alleged that she lost US$7 500.
Mandizvidza was placed on remand to November 9, pending finalisation of investigations.
