Two robbers assaulted an elderly couple from Umwinsdale before stealing their cash, wedding ring and cellphones around midnight last Friday.

Ugo Volonta, 80 and his wife, Sylvia Volonta, lost just over US$1 000 pension money to the robbers.

The two robbers, who were armed with machetes, approached Sylvia while she was in the verandah calling her dogs which had been barking animatedly.

One of the robbers struck Sylvia on the left side of her forehead and her left shoulder with a machete and she screamed for help.

Ugo rushed outside to check on her and saw her bleeding with the two robbers next to her.

The other robber attacked Ugo and struck him once on the head and repeatedly on his hands. He tried to wrestle the robbers, but was overpowered.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said the robbers force-marched the couple to their bedroom.

“They were ordered to lie down and the accused tied their hands and legs with a rope and shoe laces. The accused persons then covered their faces and stole four pellet guns from the bedroom and demanded cash.

“Complainant advised them that they were pensioners and they do not have money and the complainant gave the accused persons US$1 000 which was in his bag and US$150 from complainant’s wife’s handbag.

“The accused persons ransacked the house and stole a Redmi Note 7, Redmi cellphone, Samsung cellphone, Huawei cellphone, driver’s licence, Italian identity card, national identity, wedding ring and jewellery,” said Insp Chakanza.
