Apostolic sect leader assaults wife over failure to disclose HIV status

Zim Now Writer

A Harare woman, Tarisai Kapuya, suffered a miscarriage after she was assaulted by her husband, Worship Muranda, an apostolic sect leader, for not disclosing her HIV status.

The shocking incident came to light at the Harare Civil Court yesterday, where Kapuya was seeking a protection order against her abusive husband.

Kapuya testified that she had been enduring years of abuse from Muranda, who has three other wives. However, the abuse had escalated recently, with Muranda threatening to kill her.

On the fateful day, Kapuya fell sick and Muranda started beating her, accusing her of being HIV-positive and not disclosing her status to him. The beating was so severe that Kapuya suffered a miscarriage.

In addition to the physical abuse, Kapuya also accused Muranda of forcing her to surrender her salary to him and preventing her from going to work. She said that Muranda would embarrass her in front of his congregants, accusing her of having extra-marital affairs.

Muranda denied the allegations, but magistrate Sharon Mashavira granted Kapuya the protection order.
