Man in court over killing of arbiter in wife assault case

Michael Mashiri

A man, who stoned to death an arbiter who was trying to prevent him from assaulting his wife, has been denied bail.

Malvern Batsirai, 34, of Eastlea, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi, charged with murder.

The State, through prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, alleges that on November 5, 2023, at around 0300 hours at Killian Court, Batsirai was assaulting his wife, Nomatter Makoro, over a domestic dispute

It is alleged that the now deceased, Malvern Paul, then restrained Batsirai from assaulting his wife.

That did not go down well with Batsirai and a misunderstanding ensued between the two.

They continued quarreling until they reached Gail Court where Batsirai then teamed up with three other people who are still at large, only known by their nicknames as Gaza Cartel, Tsomu Tsomu and Darlington Dadza.

They started throwing stones and bricks at the now-deceased several times all over his body.

After that, the four left the now-deceased lying helplessly on the ground.

Police later took him to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Batsirai was ordered to approach the High Court for bail because of the magnitude of his crime.

He will appear in court on November 23.
