The three-year sponsorship deal between Sakunda Holdings and Zimbabwean football giants Dynamos and Highlanders is coming to an end on December 31, 2023.
The sponsorship brought much-needed relief and stability to both clubs, providing US$6 million in funding over the three years. Each club received US$1 million per season, with US$420 000 going towards player and technical staff salaries, and US$60 000 each year for signing-on fees.
Dynamos used the sponsorship funds to strengthen their squad, signing over 30 players in three seasons. They also finished third in the league last season and are set to compete in the Chibuku Super Cup final next month.
Highlanders used the sponsorship funds to boost their commercial side, rehabilitating the Highlanders village and giving it a fresh new look. They also roped in expatriate coach Baltermar Brito and his assistant Antonio Torres, who were paid handsomely.
Sakunda also offered a US$200 000 incentive to the club that won the league title, and a further US$150 000 bonus for qualifying into the CAF Champions League. Additionally, Sakunda facilitated the capacitation of the clubs’ administration by organizing training workshops on making a football club financially viable.
Both Dynamos and Highlanders have looked more professional on and off the field since the Sakunda sponsorship began. They have been well-kitted and looked immaculate during matches and when travelling.
However, with the contract coming to an end, the three parties have yet to approach Sakunda Holdings for renewal talks. It remains to be seen whether the sponsorship will be extended.
