Highlanders FC, currently reign atop the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League table after a goalless draw against Arenel Movers. While they lead with 19 points after 10 matches, a closer look reveals both progress and lingering concerns.
Compared to last season, Bosso is a point better at the same stage, showcasing a positive start. Their offensive prowess is evident, having already netted 15 goals, significantly more than the seven they managed last year.
However, a chink in their armour lies in their defence. They’ve conceded seven goals so far, a stark contrast to the mere two they allowed last season. This defensive vulnerability might hinder their title aspirations.
Despite topping the table for a significant portion of the previous season, Highlanders ultimately fell short of the championship. Can they translate their current lead into a long-awaited title victory this time around?
Defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars, however, have shown a significant dip, trailing their previous year’s performance by five points.
Simba Bhora has made the most significant improvement, gaining seven points compared to their debut season’s 10-match mark. Conversely, the bottom four currently mirrors last season, with Yadah, Arenel Movers, Chegutu Pirates, and Hwange occupying those slots. Only Green Fuel managed to escape the relegation zone last year.
With 24 matches remaining, the pressure is on for all teams to solidify their positions based on their ambitions. Highlanders, while currently leading, must address their defensive weaknesses and strive for consistency to finally break their championship drought. The rest of the season promises an exciting battle for the top spots and survival in the league.
