Philemon Jambaya in BULAWAYO
Highlanders outplayed their rivals Dynamos in a close 2-1 victory at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday. This win sets the tone for a potentially competitive 2024 season.
Dynamos were without key players Junior Makunike (transferred to Simba Bhora) and Tanaka Shandirwa (reported coach dispute). This lack of midfield presence proved costly as Highlanders dominated the early stages.
Melikhaya Ncube orchestrated a brilliant move, outsmarting the Dynamos defence and curling a magnificent shot past the goalkeeper to put Highlanders on the scoreboard.
The second half saw Highlanders double their lead with an Archford Faira goal from close range. However, Dynamos refused to give up. Alexander Mandinyenya pulled a goal back with 30 minutes remaining, raising hopes for a comeback.
Despite bringing on reinforcements such as Shadreck Nyahwa, Emmanuel Paga, and Elton Chikona, Dynamos couldn’t find the equaliser. Highlanders held firm to secure a crucial thre points.
Highlanders coach, Kelvin Kaindu expressed satisfaction with the result, acknowledging the defensive lapse that allowed Dynamos’ goal but praising his team’s fighting spirit
