A contingent comprising a former top ZIFA employee, a couple of lawyers and a reputable sports journalist - masquerading as part of the Warriors delegation to the World Cup qualifiers in Rwanda - have reportedly sought the assistance of the Zimbabwean Embassy in that country for the facilitation of free passage.
Sources from Rwanda say they wrote to the Embassy seeking to be helped with securing accommodation and access into the football venues.
Former Warriors general manager, Wellington Mpandare, is alleged to be heading the team of masquarads who include Morehope Chizuzu passing on as the national team’s media liaison officer.
Other members of the delegation have been named as Prosper Kadewere, brother to Warrior Tino Kadewere, as well as lawyers Everson Chatambudza, Tawongaishe Makamure and one Prosper Chari.
“They claimed to be ZIFA employees who needed assistance with hotel bookings and attending the match,” said the source, who also revealed that one of the lawyers in the entourage is a close ally to one ZIFA presidential aspirant.
A ZIFA insider who requested anonymity said:
"The million-dollar question though is the source of funding for this group. It may be no surprise at all that the big hand behind the scenes is someone eyeing the ZIFA presidency as one of the lawyers here is a close friend of an aspirant. With the elections slated for June 2024, some people are already playing dirty.
"There is an apparent ploy to subvert the democratic processes and to capture Zimbabwean football for some selfish interests hence the need for football stakeholders to go to bed with one eye open."
Mpandare was yet to respond to questions send to him by phone while Chizuzu was unreachable for comment.
