High Court judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda has fined Henrietta Rushwaya US$5 000 and had a custodial 18-month jail term wholly suspended.
Rushwaya, who is the president of Zimbabwe Miners Federation, was convicted of attempting to smuggle 6kg of gold worth US$330 000 through the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport stashed in her bag in October 2020.
The recovered gold will be forfeited to the State.
Her case was yesterday postponed to today as Justice Kwenda sought to hear submissions from the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe on the value the country would have been prejudiced of had she managed to smuggle the gold out.
The State, in its argument, had called for a stiff custodial sentence, saying the smuggling of minerals was crippling the country.
