Brittle Paper an online literary magazine for readers of African Literature. Previous winners include Blackbird Books and Masobe Books.
“Vazhure is a writer, publisher, translator, and artist who lives in Wales, in the UK. She was born in London and grew up in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. With Carnelian Heart Publishing, she is making space for Shona language literature, heeding the call of the great Ngugi wa Thiongo that we need to take seriously the “claims of our language on us.” And we celebrate her,” said Edoro.
Carnelian Heart Publishing, was founded in 2020 and has published 30 books. Vazhure was inspired to start the publishing house after failing to find a publisher who would take her Chikaranga manuscript and Amazon crashed her self-publishing options as they did not recognise the language.
Vazhure runs Carnelian Heart all by herself and outsources as needed. She has a retail partnerships with Book Fantastics and The Orange Elephant in Zimbabwe, Nuria Bookstores in Kenya, and Xarra Bookstores in South Africa.
“Something I never imagined to be within my reach. I will forever be proud of this achievement, and eternally thankful to everyone who has supported me on this journey,” says Vazhure of her achievements in the publishing field.
Another literary honour for Zimbabwe comes with Christopher Mlalazi’ Langabi making it to Brittle Paper’s 100 Notable African Books of 2023
