Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume has urged on the city's residents in areas such as Budiriro Paddock areas and Kuwadzana Paddock areas to vacate their houses in anticipation of massive floods that are expected as heavy rains pound the capital.
This comes a six-year-old boy was swept away by floods last week and his body was only recovered on Tuesday about 5km away.

This also comes as the Department of Civil Protection warned communities in flood-prone areas to be on high alert as heavy rains coupled with hailstorms are expected throughout the country until December 30, 2023.

The Meteorological Service Department of Zimbabwe said recently that heavy rains are expected in the northern parts of Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central and Harare, before spreading across the country by Saturday.

The MSD warned in a statement that low-lying areas such as Muzarabani and the Zambezi Valley among other areas were at a high risk of flooding while Tsholotsho and Binga in Matabeleland North and Nkulumane, Nketa and Cowdray Park suburbs of Bulawayo are always susceptible to flooding, especially during heavy storms.

Since the commencement of the rainy season, at least 51 people have been killed in adverse weather incidents, while property and infrastructure valued at US$187 000 was destroyed.

Among the victims were two police officers and their four-month-old daughter, who died while attempting to cross the flooded Kana River in Gokwe recently.

The latest situation report from the DCP shows that 28 people were injured as a result of inclement weather, while 1 601 households were affected, adding that it was preparing for disaster response and management.

Forecasts show that the country might be hit by two tropical cyclones during the current rainy season.

Southern Africa was last year affected by 11 cyclones, including Freddy, which devastated areas of l Mozambique, Malawi and Madagascar.
