A United Family International Church, who allegedly stole US$3 000 from a 72-year-old relative in a car deal last week, had his matter withdrawn before plea.
Donald Morgan Tendai Savanhu, 39, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing theft of trust property charges.
The complainant in the matter is Savanhu’s cousin.
The State alleges that sometime in 2020, the complainant raised money with intention of buying a car.
She approached Savanhu, who at that time was based in Beitbridge, where he was pastoring in the United Family International Church UFIC.
The court heard that on August 20, 2020, Savanhu went to the complainant’s house where he informed the complainant that he needed US$3 000 which he claimed was enough for buying as well as import duty of the car.
Savanhu promised to deliver the car within 21 days.
It is alleged that in September 2020, Savanhu lied to the complainant that he had managed to buy a Toyota Aqua and was working on its importation.
He asked the complainant to send her proof of residence and national Identification particulars, which he alleged were needed by the clearing agents and these were sent to Savanhu.
The court was informed that Savanhu brought two unknown men to the complainant’s house whom he claimed to be clearing agents from Beitbridge.
He alleged that they had come to verify the complainant’s residential address as well as identification particulars.
He then converted the whole amount he had been given to his personal use.
Since then, Savanhu kept giving the complainant empty promises until she realised that she had been duped.
The court was informed that on March 14 , 2023, the complainant went to CID police anti-corruption unit to file a report.
Total value stolen is US$3 000 and nothing was recovered.
On December 20, 2023, a team of detectives made follow-ups and arrested of Savanhu in Bindura.
