Kamativi Mine in Hwange District, Matabeleland North is set to start operations focusing on lithium mining instead of tin.
The lithium project, a joint venture between Sichuan Pude Technology Group from China and Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation, recently commissioned its phase one modern lithium processing plant.
The former tin mine, which closed in 1994 with a staff complement of around 3 000 workers, is expected to be officially commissioned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa during the first quarter of this year.
The plant, which is valued at US$10 million, is capable of producing 50 000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate annually.
This revival represents a significant development for Zimbabwe’s mining industry, contributing to job creation and economic growth.
Kamativi also deposits of tantalite, beryl, copper, beryllium, spodumene, petalite and limestone.
The plant will initially rely on a 33KV power line from Hwange, but plans are in place to construct an 88KV power line in the future.
The company has also constructed a dam to ensure a reliable water supply for the plant.
