Two drug peddlers, Norah Makwavarara, 40, and Dexter Muteredhe, were arrested on two separate occasions in connection to the illegal possession of crystal meth, police have said.
The two incidents occurred on January 13, where CID Drugs and Narcotics acting on received information arrested Makwavarara along Baines Avenue in Harare, who was in possession of 0.053 kg of crystal meth with a street value of ZWL$5 300 000, while Muteredhe was arrested in possession of 48 grammes of the same drug at Alban Court, corner Blackston and Fife Avenue, Harare.
In a statement, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that Makwavarara, who was remanded in custody to January 16 for bail application, had two pending cases from February 25 and May 6, 2023 where she defaulted court and was remanded out of custody for continuation of trial respectively.
“The suspect has been previously arrested for dealing in dangerous drugs on two different occasions and was granted bail pending trial.
“In one of the incidents, the suspect was arrested on 25th February 2023 for unlawful possession of 10 x100 mls Benylin Cough Syrup, 09 x 100mls Broncleer Cough syrup, 08 x 100 mls Adco-Salterpyn cough syrup. The suspect appeared at Harare Magistrates’ Courts where she was remanded out of custody to 21st March for continuation of trial,” Nyathi wrote in a statement.
In an unrelated incident, the police confirmed the arrest of two suspected armed robbers, Clement Ndlovu, 20, and Mduduzi Ndlovu, 28, in a robbery which occurred at Matopos Research Station, Matobos, Bulilima Mangwe.
In a statement, police said the suspects who had robbed a general dealer shop and stole US$30, a laptop and other valuables, were tracked to Insukamini Power Station, leading to their arrest.
“The arrest led to the recovery of all stolen items and a star Eibar S.A pistol 9mm calibre. The suspects have since appeared at Plumtree Regional Court where they were convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment,” Nyathi added.
The arrests follow a stepped-up community engagement by the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse, with the police encouraging the public to continue supporting the fight against drug trafficking and peddling in communities.
