Xinhua -- Tunisia foiled 99 attempts by illegal immigrants to cross the Mediterranean into Italy in a week, said the Tunisian National Guard on Monday.
Tunisia's coast guards thwarted these illegal immigration attempts off the country's coasts and rescued 2,469 illegal immigrants between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3, the Tunisian National Guard said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
The rescued illegal immigrants included 2,064 individuals of different African nationalities and 405 Tunisian nationals, it added.
Located in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia is one of the most popular transit points for illegal immigration to Europe.
Although Tunisian authorities have adopted rigorous measures to tackle the problem, the number of illegal immigrants heading to Italy has been on the rise.
