Two in court for defrauding US$66 000 in land scams

Michael Mashiri

Two people who allegedly defrauded land seekers US$66 000 have been taken to court.

Perpetual Chimuti, 57, of Number 8 Vimbic Court, Corner Kwame and 7th Street, and Pedzisai Chikari, 46, of Unit L, Seke, Chitungwiza, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing fraud allegations.

They will appear in court tomorrow for bail application.

The State, through prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, alleges that Chimuti and Chikari, who were with their accomplices who are in Banket,  advertised on social media platforms that they were an organisation purportedly instituted by a group of people, claiming to be war veterans operating as a task force based in Banket.

The accused allegedly opened various social media groups with an average of 120 to 150 people per group.

They then demanded money ranging from US$10 to USD$1 500 which they claimed was for administration, fuel and welfare for war veterans in Banket.

They also claimed that some of the money collected was for offer letter processing before then moving around Zvimba, Makonde, Rafingora and Banket areas showing their victims several farms within Mashonaland West Province.

As a result approximately US$66 000 was lost in the process.
