Michael Mashiri

A man, who was part of a team that stole from University of Zimbabwe students in Avondale, has been taken to court.

Irvine Meki, 28, appeared before magistrate Donald Ndirowei at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of armed robbery.

The State, through prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, alleges that on May 2, 2023, at around 2300 hours Meki, who was with Stephen Dick, already in custody in connection with this case, Giant and Boyka, who are still at large, went to house number 61 Mendel Road, Avondale, Harare which are houses for University of Zimbabwe students, armed with a pistol and knife.

They entered through the main gate, which was not locked before going to the main house where they broke the French door and entered the house.

The accused threatened to shoot the eight complainants if they failed to surrender their property.

Meki and his accomplices searched all the rooms and took five phones, six laptops, eight fuel coupons, five handbags, two satchels and US$200.

They later sold one of phones, a Samsung S20 cellphone, to one Lancelot Dongorere and it was subsequently recovered.

They will appear in court on February 23.
