In the heart of Zimbabwe, amidst the vibrant energy of Harare, resides a multi-talented athlete who has carved his name in the annals of handball - Aaron Simbarashe Tsombori. He is a shining testament to the power of dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering passion for the sport.

Tsombori’s journey began in 1997, and his sporting prowess blossomed amidst the bustling streets of Highlands, Harare. While he dabbled in various sporting disciplines, it was handball that truly resonated with his spirit. “Out of all the sporting events I did, I just felt that this is where I could fit in easily,” he reminisces, his voice brimming with conviction.

Equipped with a natural aptitude for the game and an undying zeal to excel, Tsombori embarked on a remarkable odyssey. He honed his skills at Churchill Boys’ High, his talent blossoming like a flower in the spring sunshine. Victories followed in quick succession, with gold medals adorning his neck, a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence.

His exceptional talent propelled him to the national stage. He donned the coveted national jersey, representing Zimbabwe at the U20 level in Zambia, his contribution instrumental in securing a commendable third-place finish. Club handball beckoned, and Tsombori embraced the challenge with unwavering enthusiasm.

He embarked on a whirlwind adventure, playing for a multitude of clubs, his name forever etched in the chronicles of their triumphs. Yet, Tsombori’s journey is not merely paved with victories. He grapples with the harsh realities of a sport often devoid of the spotlight and lucrative sponsorships. “Since handball is a grassroots sport, there is a lack of sponsorship,” he laments. “You have to cater for yourself, from bus fare to your team kit.”

Undeterred by these challenges, Tsombori finds solace in the unwavering support of his family and friends, and the invaluable guidance of his coaches - Brian Harri, Innocent Kanosvora, Valentine Kuwuya, Tafadzwa Madure, and Alouis Nyamhanga. Their unwavering belief and strategic direction have been the wind beneath his wings, propelling him forward.

Beyond the confines of the handball court, Tsombori flourishes as an advocate and public administrator by profession. He skillfully navigates the world of work at DStv, channeling the earnings he garners to fuel his handball aspirations.

His message to aspiring athletes is a beacon of inspiration: “Hard work forever pays and discipline beats talent every day,” he emphasises. It is a philosophy that he embodies in every facet of his life, both on and off the court.

When not engrossed in the world of handball, Tsombori seeks solace in the camaraderie of playing social five-aside soccer, the thrill of exploring new destinations, and the quiet contemplation that comes with reading articles. He is a man of simple pleasures, his love for food extending to anything “put on the table”.

Tsombori finds inspiration in the legendary Timur Dibirov, whose exceptional skills serve as a constant source of motivation. He proudly dons the jersey numbers 17 and 12, each number carrying a unique significance in his sporting narrative.

As a member of the Play Handball programme, Tsombori actively contributes to the development of underprivileged handball players and the promotion of the sport in schools. Additionally, he is poised to join the Matibiri Foundation, an organisation dedicated to uplifting the lives of underprivileged athletes in handball and hockey.
