The Zambian government has commended the removal of sanctions on Zimbabwe by the United States of America, noting that it is a positive step towards economic and societal development among states on the continent.

The sentiments by the Zambian government come as the USA has loosened restrictive policy measures on Zimbabwe by removing some entities and individuals on the sanction list, with Zambia welcoming the developments, which indicate renewed engagements to tackle imminent challenges facing the continent at large.

In a statement, Zambian Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe reiterated that the decision by the USA is a sign of reconfigured relations between the two states that will see a joint bid to tackle livelihood challenges such as food security and climate change.

“Zambia takes cognisance of the profound implications of this decision as an important step towards reconfiguring relations with Zimbabwe and consequently supporting development activity in the southern African region. The decision opens doors for renewed engagement to tackle pressing challenges, including those concerning food security and climate change which greatly affects livelihoods,” minister Haimbe said in a statement.

“Zambia stands firm in supporting efforts to alleviate the broader societal impacts affecting the region, the continent and the globe as a whole. Therefore this latest decision is welcomed as a positive step among many others to follow,” the Minister added.

He also implored on the USA and other states to remove sanctions against Zimababwe, which will usher in crucial progression in relation to inclusive democratic governance implementation.
