A man who allegedly hired a car and sold it has been denied bail.
Batsirai Mhungu, 44, of Engineering, Highfield, Harare appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
He was ordered to appear in court on March 8 for bail application.
The State alleges that on February 29, Mhungu, allegedly went to number 6 Loughborough Road in Marlborough and hired a white Nissan X-trial.
He gave fake details of himself stating that he was Kenneth Change. He was supposed to return the car on March 3, but failed to do so.
The State alleges that he went on to make a fake registration book in the name of Godwishes Mazivisa with a Mainway Meadows address.
It is alleged that the accused then sold the car for US$8 000 to one Cosmo Chirombo. The complainant later discovered the offence and made a police report.
The State, also alleges that on February 23, at around 1030 hours, Mhungu and his accomplice one Ewin Muchariwana, who is still at large, went to Laluer Car Rental at corner 8th Street and Herbert Chitepo Avenue in Harare and hired a car, a Honda Fit GK3.
The State alleges that the following day the accused allegedly manufactured a fake registration book of the car, a fake identity card in the name of Kenneth Change.
Mhungu allegedly then sold the car to one Bruce Bigboy Mavhunga for US$7 200.
The complainant discovered the offence and made a police report and the car was recovered from Mavhunga.
On March 5, it is alleged that the police was informed that Mhungu was at Engen Service Station in Eastlea, selling a car using the name, Kenneth Change.
They went and arrested him and he was found with a fake identity card with the name Kenneth Change.
As a result, US$16 000 worth was stolen.
