Former secretary of the Chitungwiza City Council, Charity Maunga, has reportedly applied for a position at Harare City Council. This news comes amid concerns raised regarding her dismissal from Chitungwiza in 2018 due to allegations of corruption.
Maunga’s application has sparked worry within the local government sector, with sources expressing apprehension over Harare City Council’s potential lack of due diligence in investigating the reasons behind her firing.
Documents obtained by Zim Now reveal that Maunga was suspended without pay in May 2018, followed by her official dismissal. A letter dated May 8, 2018, details the accusations against her, including acting inconsistently with her employment contract and potential misconduct encompassing incompetence, unprofessional conduct, dishonesty, abuse of office, and mismanagement of resources.
Maunga’s pursuit of a new position in Harare has cast a spotlight on the importance of thorough background checks during the hiring process. Local government sources have emphasised the necessity of investigating the reasons behind an employee’s dismissal from previous positions to ensure transparency and accountability.
The outcome of Maunga’s application for a position at Harare City Council remains unknown.
