A Mutare teacher, Bruce Mugadhuwi, 32, has been fined for impersonating students during Zimbabwe School Examinations Council examinations.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Mugadhuwi, who teaches at Commercial College, appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Courts facing two counts of exam fraud.

The court heard that on October 16, 2023, Mugadhuwi entered into an agreement with two students, Shellington Brown and Mirriam Maposa, to write their Zimsec Mathematics exam for them. Brown and Maposa reportedly sat in the exam hall as planned, while Mugadhuwi secretly completed their answer sheets elsewhere. When it was time to submit, Mugadhuwi allegedly switched the completed answer sheets with the blank ones the students had filled.

The scheme unravelled in January 2024 when Zimsec withheld Brown and Maposa’s results. Investigations led to Mugadhuwi’s arrest on March 22, 2024.

It was also revealed that Mugadhuwi had accepted bribes of US$380 from Brown and US$300 from Maposa for his illicit service.

The magistrate presiding over the case, sentenced Mugadhuwi to a fine of US$150.
