The National Democratic Working Group and Democratic Party have vowed to challenge the rumoured move to postpone elections.
This comes following sensational claims of talks between Zanu PF and the Citizens Coalition for Change led by Professor Welshman Ncube, purportedly to amend the Constitution Amendment (No. 20) Act, 2013 by cancelling the scheduled 2028 general elections in Zimbabwe.
In a statement, NDWG Head of Information and Communications Department, Darlington Chigwena said the said talks are aimed at subverting the fundamental democratic right of Zimbabweans to hold constitutional periodic democratic elections.
“As an inclusive movement, the National Democratic Working Group unequivocally rejects such potentially treacherous talks which aim to subvert the fundamental democratic right of Zimbabweans to hold constitutional periodic democratic elections to appoint a legitimate government after every five years,” said Chigwena.
He added that the NDWG will put the said issue before the national consultation process currently underway throughout Zimbabwe.
On the other hand, the Democratic Party also condemned what it called the “conspiracy to ban periodic elections” alleging this was meant to establish a permanent constitutional one-party-state rule in Zimbabwe.
“The plot to abolish the 2028 elections is a fatal violation of the democratic right of Zimbabweans to appoint a legitimate government through open free and fair democratic elections before or in 2028. In a democracy, democratic elections are held to solve a national leadership problem of governance failure whenever it occurs,” said DP president, Dr. Wurayayi Zembe.
Zimbabwe last held Harmonised Elections in August 2023 with the next round of elections due in 2028.
