A star is born! Nestled within the vibrant streets of Mabvuku/Tafara, a creative flame flickered to life amidst the everyday struggles. Leo Author Chumbo, now known by the stage name OgaLeo, emerged from a family of five, his childhood a testament to resilience in the face of adversity.
This 25-year-old’s journey began not under the klieg lights, but in the heart of production. Majoring in videography, Leo honed his skills, eventually venturing to South Africa in 2016. Working under a production company showcased on Mzansi Bioshkop, a realisation dawned - his true passion lay in acting, not just capturing it.
Returning to Zimbabwe in 2019, a new chapter unfolded. Fuelled by curiosity and a yearning to perform, Leo embarked on a path of skit-making, uploading his comedic genius on YouTube. Fate, however, had a different role in store.
A pivotal series cast him as a “cursed Nigerian guy” in Zimbabwe, a character that resonated deeply with audiences. Not only did it propel him into the limelight, but it also birthed his unforgettable stage name, OgaLeo.
With unwavering support from his family, OgaLeo has carved a remarkable niche in the local content creation scene. Collaborations with over 20 Zimbabwean powerhouses, including Magic Wacho, Ma very very, and Georgina the Bread winner, solidified his place among the industry’s elite.
Kalistas, the Nigerian comedic maestro, serves as a constant source of motivation for OgaLeo. His dedication and storytelling prowess fuel OgaLeo’s own creative fire. Yet, his journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Rejections from fellow artists became stepping stones, urging him to champion perseverance for all aspiring creators. He cautions against the pitfalls of financial demands, advocating for reinvesting resources back into the art itself.
OgaLeo readily acknowledges the industry’s challenges. It’s a tough terrain, he admits, but unwavering focus paves the way for eventual success. However, his relentless dedication comes at a personal cost.
Marriage, for now, remains a distant dream. The demands of his craft and the constant pursuit of creating content, leave little room for another demanding role.
Despite the all-consuming nature of his passion, OgaLeo recognises the need for downtime. Music becomes his refuge, a source of solace in quiet moments. And when it comes to sports, his loyalties are divided - a die-hard fan of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Chelsea, while his heart also beats for the local Zimbabwean team, Highlanders.
With coach Kevin Kaindu at the helm, OgaLeo fervently hopes for a season that brings smiles to the faces of Bosso fans everywhere.
OgaLeo’s story is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance. From the heart of the Zimbabwean ghetto to the national spotlight, his journey is far from over.
As he continues to push boundaries and redefine comedic brilliance, one thing remains certain - the world is yet to witness the full potential of OgaLeo.
