The upcoming Bulawayo Arts Festival, running from June 2nd to 5th, promises a vibrant celebration of the city's unique history and cultural tapestry. This four-day event coincides with Bulawayo Day on June 1st, marking the city’s 130th anniversary.
Festival organisers are gearing up for an exciting program designed to engage all ages. Bulawayo Day kicks off with a celebratory atmosphere, featuring a street carnival procession and a concert honouring local legends through “koNtuthu Legends”.
“The preparations for the 2024 Bulawayo Arts Festival are truly exciting,” said Nesisa Mpofu, Bulawayo City Council’s corporate communications manager. “Bulawayo Day will be filled with a carnival atmosphere, including a procession and a special concert celebrating our city’s legends.”
The official festival launch on June 2nd features a performance by Black Mfolosi, a leading Bulawayo musical group. The festivities culminate on the 5th with the Imbokodo Concert, an all-female music showcase.
“We’ve ensured young people are included,” Mpofu remarked. “There will be a spelling bee and an ‘Inxwala’ series of events. We’ll also wrap up with the Imbokodo Concert, celebrating the talents of our female artists.”
Beyond the performances, the festival incorporates workshops and exhibitions that delve into Bulawayo’s rich cultural heritage, enriching the “Inxwala” series. This multi-faceted approach promises an immersive experience for festival attendees.
