Gender based violence has landed a cop in court after his wife reported him for threatening her with a firearm.
John Chitsaka, arraigned before a Harare magistrate, is accused of stealing a firearm from a police station in Gutu way back in 2005.
The alleged theft occurred between September and December of that year, while Chitsaka was stationed at the Gutu Police Station. Prosecutors claim he stole a P1 BSAP type firearm, a service weapon entrusted to him.
For nearly two decades, the case remained cold. However, in April 2024, a twist emerged. Chitsaka’s wife, according to the State, reported him to the Victim Friendly Unit, alleging he possessed an unlicensed firearm and threatened her with it.
Police, acting on this tip, searched Chitsaka’s Harare residence and recovered the weapon. Further investigation revealed it matched the firearm reported missing from Gutu Police Station in 2005.
Chitsaka was granted bail and will return to court in June for a trial date. This case serves as a reminder that past actions can have long-lasting consequences, and stolen items have a way of resurfacing.
