Walter Musona's well-taken free-kick in the 83rd minute secured a crucial victory for Simba Bhora over Caps United in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League encounter played at Rufaro Stadium. This win keeps Simba Bhora in the title race, level on points with FC Platinum and just five behind leaders Manica Diamonds.
The match was played under a somber shadow following the passing of Caps United assistant coach Nelson Matongorere earlier this week. A minute of silence was observed before kickoff, with players from both teams paying their respects to the coaching legend. Caps United players donned t-shirts bearing Matongorere's image in a touching tribute.Simba Bhora started brightly, with Musona testing Caps United goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga early on. Tymon Machope and Harrison Masina also spurned good chances for the visitors, failing to capitalize on Mateyaunga's mistakes.
Caps United threatened in spurts. William Manondo thought he had put them ahead in the 22nd minute, but his goal was chalked off for offside. Godknows Murwira rattled the crossbar with a direct free-kick, and Simba Bhora goalkeeper Simba Chinani made a crucial save to deny Wayne Makuva on the rebound.
The deadlock was broken in the 50th minute when Masina capitalized on a defensive lapse to put Caps United ahead. Simba Bhora responded quickly, with Mthokozisi Msebe nearly equalizing moments later. However, it was Rodwell Chinyengetere who restored parity from the penalty spot in the 79th minute after Vasili Kawe's handball inside the box.
As the match approached its climax, Simba Bhora snatched victory. Musona's free-kick took a deflection on the wall, wrong-footing Mateyaunga and finding the back of the net.
Simba Bhora coach Tonderai Ndiraya acknowledged his team's struggles but praised their resilience in securing the win. "We knew it would be difficult," he admitted. "Playing three games in seven days, including a trip to Bulawayo, took its toll. We lacked sharpness, especially in finishing our first-half chances."
Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe did not address the media after the match.
The result sees Simba Bhora climb to third in the standings, with Caps United remaining in eighth position. The win keeps Simba Bhora in the title hunt
