A Public Prosecutor in Henrietta Rushwaya case, Pardon Dziva, has been convicted on charges of fraud, following his demand for a bribe to facilitate a lower sentence for the former.
Reports are that the accused demanded a US$20 000 bribe from Henrietta’s sister, Helliate, in exchange for a lighter sentence for Henrietta who was facing a gold smuggling case at the courts.
The accused is reported to have sent Alex Tenno to collect the bribe money from Helliate, who had pretended to agree to the deal, after reporting the matter to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest at the scene while receiving the bribe money.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the co-accused led Helliate to the Prosecutor at Kebbab Restaurant in Milton Park after she had refused to give him the money before seeing Dziva.
“It is the State’s case that on the 15th of November 2023, the first accused person demanded US$20 000 from Wellington Tavarasha in order to facilitate a lighter sentence for Henrietta Rushwaya who had been convicted of smuggling by a Harare High Court Judge.
“Helliate Rushwaya agreed to meet the accused persons at CABS Centre whereupon the second accused person approached Helliate Rushwaya and indicated that he had been sent to collect the money by the first accused. Helliate Rushwaya refused to hand over the money and insisted on handing it over to the first accused. They drove to Kebbab Restaurant in Milton Park where they met the first accused. The first accused proceeded to Helliate Rushwaya’s motor vehicle where she handed over the trap money before the accused persons were both subsequently arrested,” said the NPAZ.
The accused persons are set to appear before the court on June 4 for pre- sentencing hearing.
